What you can do in an emergency

Cutting off the water supply in an emergency

If your tap connects to the mains, it will be relatively easy to cut off the supply. Turn off the indoor stop valve. If this valve is stiff, try using a spanner or a little oil to loosen it. When you have done this, simply drain the remaining water away by turning on the taps until the flow of water has stopped.

If your cold or hot water feeds off pipes from a cistern (water tank), there should be either a gate valve or a mini-stopcock available to turn off. The stop valve is usually located along side the cold-water tank. When you have turned these off drain the remaining water by turning on the tap until the flow of water has stopped.

If you find that the gate valve or stopcock are not present, then you will need to drain the cistern. To do this you must first prevent water from entering it by switching off at the mains. Alternatively, fasten the tank’s ball valve by first placing a piece of wood across the tank and then tying the arm of the ball valve to that wood. Either way the flow of water should halt.

As a last resort, you might wish to turn off the outdoor stopcock. This will be located somewhere outside your property, possibly in the street. (If you cannot locate the stopcock, try contacting your water company for this information.) Take the cover off and insert the stopcock key. When you reach the handle at the bottom, turn in a clockwise direction to cut off the water flow.
